We are breaking this by educating young women right from school, about their rights and responsibilities. We are also working with men to educate fellow men on the different forms of violence against women that they perhaps did not know. This includes one of the most common amongst men – reproductive coercion.
EDUCATION
Every girl deserves the chance to learn, dream and become.
Education is a right – not a privilege.
Yet too many girls continue to face barriers that affect their ability to access, remain in and benefit from education. From period poverty and limited resources to social and economic barriers, these challenges can interrupt a girl’s learning and limit her opportunities.
At Msichana Uganda, we work to create pathways that enable girls and young women to access education, stay in school and see possibilities beyond the barriers around them.
Our work includes education support, mentorship, career guidance, information sharing and advocacy that help girls build confidence and pursue their aspirations.
We also recognize that keeping girls in school requires more than classrooms. It requires supportive communities, access to menstrual health information and products, positive role models and opportunities for girls to see themselves as future leaders.
Our commitment is to help create an environment where every girl can learn without being held back because she is a girl.
In 2024, our education work included an information-sharing session for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, bringing inspirational women from different professional backgrounds to share experiences and guidance with girls. We also celebrated the graduation of Nampijja Leticia, who completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Procurement and Logistics Management through a scholarship partnership.
Because an educated girl is not only prepared for her future – she is better positioned to shape it.
SKILLING
A skill can become confidence. Confidence can become opportunity.
We believe every girl and young woman has potential and sometimes what she needs is the opportunity, knowledge and support to turn that potential into a skill.
Skilling is at the heart of our approach to sustainable empowerment.
We provide opportunities for girls and young women to develop practical, hands-on and entrepreneurial skills that can support education, livelihoods, leadership and personal development.
Our approach goes beyond training. We combine skills development with mentorship, exposure, career guidance and opportunities to apply what is learned.
One example is our reusable sanitary pad production initiative, where women are equipped with tailoring and pad-making skills. These skills can create pathways to income generation while contributing to the fight against period poverty. The 2024 Annual Report highlights how these technical and entrepreneurial abilities can help women earn income, support their families and invest in their education.
We also believe in helping girls see beyond the limitations placed on them. Through mentorship and career guidance, we connect young women with experiences and role models that can help them imagine and work towards different possibilities for their futures.
We don’t just want girls to have dreams. We want them to have the skills and confidence to turn those dreams into action.
